(In Italian culture) Traditionally the chameleon calls to mind the concept of camouflage, hence the ability and the intention to hide itself. In other cases, it used for describing a person who easily changes opinion (especially political opinion), or even insincere person.
But the reality seems to be different.
The change of skin color is the expression of specific physical or physiological conditions, such as the change in body temperature, or an emotional states, such as fear and stress, or a way to communicate, such as during a fight preparation or to broadcast sexual availability.
Then the chameleon does not really hide, so it is not insincere, it does not wear a changing mask, but it reveals itself, it is honest, it shows its real intentions.
In this work, the chameleon represent who is misunderstood or rather who is victim of a consolidated misunderstanding, who is victim of a bias.
But the placid Chameleon on its branch probably does not care about this misunderstanding.
